If you have been striving to live a more sustainable lifestyle with your kitty, you are already on the right track with Kitty Sift! We are proud to produce a product that is made 100% from Post Consumer Waste Recycled Cardboard, but there are many additional steps you can take to reduce your kitty’s carbon pawprint. There are several different factors that come into play when it comes to achieving the greenest solution, including the regulations of your municipality, so we’ve compiled some additional tips below to find out what may fit your household!

Use a plastic-free litter box

Kitty Sift was created as a natural, plastic-free alternative to a traditional litter box. While there are several benefits to your kitty’s health, we are extremely proud to have a product that also contributes to the health of our planet.

We are excited to announce our recent partnership with Mud Bay, a decades old pioneer in the natural pet care industry. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Mud Bay has long focused on consumer education when it comes to healthy and happy pets. They also own Green Pet, a business that serves to safely and sustainably compost pet waste so more pet owners could enjoy affordable pet waste removal and composting. While based in Seattle WA, and Portland, OR, keep an eye out for a similar solution in your backyard!

Contact your municipality

When it comes to composting pet waste and related products, the first step is to do a bit of research on the rules and regulations in your area. The US Composting Council® has provided a great tool to begin your search by state, and includes contact information to help with your research:

In most municipalities that offer a composting service, the Kitty Sift litter box, liners and shield can be composted as long as the material is clean & dry.

Pick a biodegradable litter

There are many different options when it comes to picking a litter for your kitty. While many mainstream clumping litters contain toxic and potentially harmful ingredients, there are several innovative new products on the market. Here are some of our favorites:

*TESTED and compatible with Kitty Sift sifting liners

When using Kitty Sift Sifting Liners, it is important to always use a fine grain (granule) clumping litter! Our line of disposable litter boxes is compatible with most biodegradable litters on the market.

Use a brown bag

When disposing of soiled litter, many kitty parents first add it to a small bag before adding it to their bin. Though there are many ‘biodegradable’ versions of these bags on the market, they still take a good amount of time to break down. Our friends at Treehugger recommend using a brown paper bag for the most sustainable results!

They also note that it is absolutely NOT recommended to flush your cat litter, even if it is advertised as ‘flushable’. According to Treehugger, “Cat waste can clog your pipes, contaminate drinking water, and hurt ecosystems”.

Take the first step to a greener kitty with Kitty Sift

Kitty Sift is a great first step towards a greener kitty, and we commend you for making the effort to foster a healthier pet & planet!
